The Alabang Eagles have emphatically won the PRFU 7’s league ‘A’ Division Trophy by remaining undefeated in all 13 games over the 3 rounds of the 2009 series. The Eagles youth and pace shone through with most of the team aged between 19-25.

In a wet day at Nomads the Eagles were able to account for MAAP A, 31 to 0, MAAP B, 41 to 0 and finally the Nomads, 17 to 0 and finished the day with a resounding for and against of +89 . The ‘A’ Division players of the series was awarded to Tim Bwehemi who scored a several tries during the series to be the top try scorer and this feat was attained with him missing the second round through injury.

The ‘B’ Division Trophy was won by the MAAP Warriors who defeated the Alabang Ibons by 19-17 in the best game of the day. The MAAP Warriors were supposed to play against the PNPA for the ‘B’ Division final but PNPA could not attend the finals round at Nomads due to PNPA commitments.

The ‘B’ Division player of the Series was awarded to Andrea Engelbrecht and at 18 years old he is certainly a player to watch out for in the next four years. His strong running and kicking game coupled with his reliable hands make him a complete fly half and he will certainly push for this position at the Philippine National U/20s team this coming November.

Positives to come from the 2009 PRFU 7’s league included the introduction of Rugby 7’s at Rizal National Stadium (RDS 1 &2) and the selection of 6 locally based players in the 2009 Philippine National Men’s 7’s team who will attend the 7’s ARFU Asian championships in Brunei and Borneo in October.
If the National 7’s team can win a top 3 position at this year’s Asian Championships they will have a chance to attend the world renowned Hong Kong 7’s.
With the Asian International Rugby Union Season upon us current and prospective Filipino-Heritage Rugby Union Internationals are hard at work with the Parramatta Two Blues Rugby Union Club preparing for the Asian 5 Nations (A5N) Division 3 tournament being held at the University of Makati in the Philippines between the 1st and 4th of July.
